A brighter shade of green to hit Swan Hill streets!

Swan Hill streets will take on a brighter shade of green in the coming months as green lidded waste bins are rolled onto nature strips for collection!

More than 320 green waste bins, for the collection of garden waste including prunings, leaf litter, weeds and lawn clippings, were recently delivered by the Swan Hill Rural City Council to residents registered for the new service which will see green waste collected at the kerbside and recycled at the Swan Hill landfill into mulch.

The Central Murray Regional Waste Management Group’s (CMRWMG) Chairperson Neville Goulding regards the roll out of the green waste service as an excellent opportunity for Swan Hill to decrease the volume of waste sent to landfill.

“Swan Hill’s green waste service has the potential to dramatically decrease the volume of waste sent to landfill” Director Goulding remarked.

“Anywhere between 40 and 50% of waste in kerbside rubbish bins is food or green waste,” he went on to say.

CMRWMG executive officer Karen Fazzani hopes residents will get behind the green waste collection service which marks a new era in recycling for the Swan Hill Rural City Council.

“Green waste collections are not available everywhere and this is an excellent move for residents of the Swan Hill Rural City Council community, and regional Victoria”.

“Residents have the chance to take up a service that will not only save waste from landfill, but provide a convenient way of disposing garden prunings or lawn clippings that can otherwise become a chore when trips to the landfill have to be made,” said Ms Fazzani.

The CMRWMG is thrilled to note that the streets of the Swan Hill community will soon take on a brighter shade of green when the first green waste collections take place in the first weeks of January 2012. The Swan Hill Rural City Council is to be congratulated on a great initiative.
