Loddon Shire’s Achievements Recognised

Loddon Shire’s ongoing commitment to waste minimisation and recycling has been
recognised with the presentation of Kerbside Pride silver certification.

Loddon Mayor Geoff Curnow and CEO John McLinden were presented with their silver Kerbside Pride certificate by Central Murray Regional Waste Management Group (CMRWMG) Executive Officer, Karen Fazzani on Wednesday 8th of February 2012.

“Since 2006, Loddon Shire have actively participated in waste education programs that helped them identify ways to improve their waste management systems for the sake of the environment, and to trim Council’s costs,” Ms Fazzani explained.

“Through programs such as Kerbside Pride, Loddon Council have almost halved their waste to landfill, and increased their recycling diversion by over 30%.

“The Shire are to be commended for their continual level of commitment to waste minimisation activities six years on since their first waste assessment and action plan,” commented Ms Fazzani.

“They are the first of the CMRWMG’s member councils to achieve Kerbside Pride
certification,” she went on to say.

A waste assessment completed in late 2011 found that some contamination of
recycling bins was occurring.

“Things such as polystyrene and soft plastics were making their way into recycling
bins,” stated CMRWMG Regional Education Officer Shae Hellstedt, who went on to advice that the problem was addressed with a presentation to staff on recycling right.
