Resolve to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!

The New Year is a perfect time to look back on the past and make plans, or resolutions, for a brighter future! It is estimated that almost 50% of Australians will make at least one New Years resolution this year in a bid to improve their quality of life. Unfortunately though, less than half of those will maintain theat resolution past six months.

You have the potential to make a big impact on our environment by reducing waste to landfill; which in turn saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. So why not resolve to reduce, reuse and recycle more? It’s easy, and you can start today!

Firstly, did any of your Christmas gifts replace older items? If so recycle them at a Resource Recovery Centre (landfill or transfer station), or better still if they’re in a good condition donate them to a charity for reuse.

Secondly, if you’re having a clean out over the summer holidays keep in mind that the following items can be dropped off at Central Murray Resource Recovery Centres (landfills and transfer stations) for recycling at a reduced cost or no fee at all!
• E-waste – all electrical appliances are accepted,
• Fluorescence Light Bulbs – including tubes and compact fluorescent globes,
• Garden Waste – lawn clippings and prunings,
• Scrap Metal – engine parts, motors, white goods and scrap metal,
• Waste Oil – used motor oil can be recycled at most sites for free, and
• Household Recyclables – steel and aluminium cans, glass jars and bottles, plastic Codes 1 to 7, wrapping paper, cards and cardboard, aerosol cans and newspapers.

Thirdly, have a think about your current recycling practices. Do you remember to put recyclable items in the bin loose to avoid bagged items going straight to landfill? Are their items such as shampoo bottles or toilet rolls that aren’t making it to the recycle bin? Maybe you need collection containers for your recyclables in the laundry, bathroom and kitchen?

Why not take up the challenge to reduce, reuse and recycle to the best of your ability, and know that this is one resolution that is easy to keep, and feels good!
